Julia Machlin Worker Advocate

Julia is currently a senior at Ithaca College, where she majors in Literatures in English and Sociology. As an Ithaca native, Julia was fortunate to grow up in an area that harbors a passion for community-based organizing and grassroots movements. Throughout her years in Ithaca, she has participated in multiple movements, one of the most notable being the Poor People’s Campaign. She has spent time lobbying in Albany with Planned Parenthood, and with Our Climate to pass the Climate and Community Protection Act.

At Ithaca College, Julia worked closely with the Ithaca College Contingent Faculty Union over the past year, as they faced mass amounts of layoffs due to Ithaca College enacting the Academic Prioritization Process. Along with other students and contingent faculty members, Julia created the Open the Books Campaign, a coalition of staff, faculty, and students advocating for shared governance in higher education. At TCWC, Julia primarily works with the worker’s hotline, supporting workers on the local and national levels. Julia believes in the power of community-based organizing based in solidarity and is pleased to be at an organization that helps uplift the voices of those who are too often silenced.
